Maslow Anyone?

I find myself thinking about Maslow's hierarchy of needs here and there. Tonight, after dinner with a good friend I thought about it on the way home as I was reflecting on being firmly in the third Maslow tier of having love and belonging. Now. I'm not going to deconstruct it, or contribute to it or anything like that, but my thoughts on it are that life just isn't this simple. Sure there's some patter here, some logic, but it's not an illumination of the soul. Still, it is something to get us started with. So I thought I'd post it up just because I think about it a lot.

I think I've told you this, but I can't remember.... A lot of educational theories are based on Maslow's work. A new catch phrase has even come from it: "student centered learning." If the main goal is self actualization, then the student must get there on his or her own. The self-esteem movement came from this, although I think we've gone a little overboard these days....some kids think they're the center of the universe now, but I digress....
It's interesting that this model is the reason why schools have free lunch programs (physiological), and after school programs (safety). All to get students to the "problem solving" level at the top of the stack.
Alright, I know this wasn't your point when you brought it up, but I just thought I'd share a little more about the triangle! :-)
